The State of Jones Debate
On July 19, 2009
There is a fascinating debate afoot on the new book The State of Jones I mentioned in a post on June 23rd here. Authors John Stauffer and Sally Jenkins respond to the three part review by Vicki Bynum. I suggest that interested readers begin with Dr. Bynum’s review (Part III here) and then make your way over to Kevin Levin’s blog post where the majority of the debate is captured here.

Nice to meet you, John! Now if we can only get this linkage problem figured out . . . . I’ll check some of the internet server issues you mentioned, Rene.
I’m wondering if everything will be fine once Kevin returns and resumes his hosting function?
Vikki
John and Vikki,
Are you both using later versions of IE? I’ve successfully hit the site with Firefox and Safari on a Mac. I also got in using IE version 6.0.2900.
I’m on Time Warner. I’m not sure what the cause is but it sounds like it’s hit or miss.
Wish I could help more.

On another note…
Vikki – John is the playwright I mentioned.
John – Vikki wrote on this subject prior to the Jenkins/Stauffer book. Rights to her book were purchased to make the film.
Consider yourselves introduced via the blogosphere.
Rene
When I clicked on the link, the page appeared, overlaid immediately by an Explorer message that said IE couldn’t open the site. When I closed the message, the attempt to open the site aborted.
Same result with each of a handful of attempts.
John
Hi Victoria,
I just checked and was able to get in OK. A mystery….
Rene
Rene,
Several of us out here in cyberspace haven’t been able to access Civil War Memory since moderator Kevin Levin left for Amsterdam. Is this a common problem, or do others have a different link that gets them through? If not, I guess we’ll just have to await Kevin’s return.

I have the same problem with IE. Try Firefox. I have both browsers, because both have problems rendering some sites.
