Two new fiction works have made their way to my library. The March by E. L. Doctorow. This book was required reading for the Yale course by David W. Blight on the Civil War era which I mentioned here. I picked up a nice hardback used and am listening to it on my MP3 via download from the library.

If you enjoy Civil War novels, you should try Shades of Gray: A Novel of the Civil War in Virginia by Jessica James. It’s unusual that a female wrote such a historically accurate and entertaining novel about war.

The Doctorow book is a marvelous read. but remember that it’s a novel. His description of the March 10, 1865 Battle of Monroe’s Crossroads is largely factually incorrect. Be careful.
